Swimming was hard. I swam slowly and when I finished the swim I thought my race starts here but after a while on the bike, I had a back pain I never experienced before. Mario’s comment was that during the race you push yourself more and then you have stress that reveals itself through pains. “I tried to stick with Kees on the bike but Kees was too fast. During the run I felt good. It was very hard for me to go up the hill to the casino. I wanted to finish so bad that I started running faster. I’m happy with my time as my goal was to finish in less than 6 hours and I finished in 5:30 (get exact time from excel sheet). I want to improve for next year. Mario mentioned that it was good not to go too hard on the bike or on a run lap.

In the water there were too many people, I lost my goggles and started swimming the breast stroke for a while. On the second swim lap, I felt good. On the bike, I went slowly as recommended by Peter. Unfortunately I got the first flat tire since 2 or 3 years. Pablo was faster uphill but I would catch up with him on the downhill. The run was very hot. Too hot for me. I’m very happy with the experience and excited to go to the world championships in Florida.

I was quite sick the week before and the days before the event. I felt great during the swim but on the bike, at the first service stop I starting feeling bad again. I was hoping to get my energy back on the downhills. The run is usually my strongest point but without energy, I was just thinking that I wanted to finish and started walking. I pleased myself walking, looking at the Monaco scenery. Mario’s comment, “The worst for an athlete is not to have any energy left. In that case it’s best to stop racing so it’s a good thing he started walking.

My swim went fine, but as I was not riding my own bike and it was heavier than mine, plus the gear before the last one didn’t work. Also the brakes were dangerous and I had a hard time getting used to them. For the run, the 2 first laps went fine but in the third lap I had no energy left because I didn’t eat enough. Mario’s comment: “Andrea didn’t have energy because of the heavier bike and not because he did not eat. If he had had his own bike, he would have made a better time
Uwe:

I drank so much salt water during the swim that I didn’t need to take any salt tablets! I was very slow at the swim but told myself to stay cool. I thought about Kees, André, Pablo and Andrea in front of me and that motivated me to go faster. I went fast on the first hill but on the second one my knee started to hurt. On the flat parts I would go very fast. I was happy because I got past many other athletes on the bike ride. For a while I had a bad stitch that slowed me. My transitions from the bike to the run was really fast. During the first run lap, I thought about my knee and paced myself. On the second & 3rd run I felt more comfortable. Globally, I really enjoyed the race.Mario’s comments: Uwe did a great job as with his knee accident we were unsure he would make the race 6 weeks ago.
Fiona:

Finisher number 3 in her category

and decided to go.
Was one person close to receiving a slot for the Hawaii Ironman championships.
During the swim I was kicked in the chin, in the face, nose, goggles and chest. I tried to relax and tell myself it didn’t matter but then I would be kicked again! The second lap I swam better. I felt like I was swimming to survive. On the bike I took my time the first 20 minutes. Then I noticed some girls, one with a red top and another with a black top that were regularly catching me up on the hills and I would overtake them on the downhills thinking about Mario’s advice “Don’t use the BREAKS!” I thought I would catch up with the other women on the run, as they were out of my sight at the end of the bike. My run was great and I was satisfied to overtake all the women I was racing against during the bike. The whole experience was just fantastic.
Mario’s comments: Fiona had only 8 months of training but she has it in her to do great. Swim start in Monaco is one of the hardest in the world because it is narrow and the bike is toughest with 3 steep hills.
Marna:
Start number 521
Marna’s knee was hurting on the bike, due to her previous injury so she still went up the first steep hill and started the second courageously, but then could not continue any further. She was still happy about the whole experience.
